Green Belt football pitches get green light

Developers who want to build more than 300 homes in the Green Belt have won planning permission to put sports facilities on an adjoining site in Hertfordshire.

London-based Belgrave Land had been refused planning permission to redevelop the former Ballito sports ground in Smallford by St Albans District Council. But it has now been given the go-ahead by a Government planning inspector following an appeal.

Belgrave wants to put two football pitches and a cricket table on the site and build a new clubhouse. The council had opposed the development because of several other sports clubs in the immediate vicinity It was also concerned at the effect the development would have on the ecology of the site which is within Watling Chase Community Forest.

In a letter announcing his decision, inspector Martin Whitehead said the proposal would enhance the character and appearance of the surrounding area and would not have an adverse effect on its ecology. He felt the site was far enough away from homes to ensure that it would not cause significant harm to the living conditions of local residents.

Belgrave is also waiting for the results of a planning appeal following its bid to redevelop the adjoining Glinwell Nursery site with 315 homes together with community facilities.

The district council had failed to reach a decision within the statutory period.
